🍁 Fall Foliage (October)
Peak color in Hocking Hills typically hits during the second and third weeks of October (roughly October 12–25). Sugar maples and birches change first — crimson and bright yellow. Hickories follow with deep gold. Oaks and beeches are last, producing bronze and amber tones that can persist into early November.
Best Fall Viewpoints Near Rockbridge
- Conkle's Hollow Rim Trail (5 min) — panoramic canopy views from 200-foot cliffs. The single best fall overlook in the region.
- Cantwell Cliffs (20 min) — sweeping forest vistas from the rim. Far fewer people than Conkle's.
- Hocking Hills Scenic Byway (SR-374) — the drive itself is stunning in mid-October.
Fall Booking Reality
Mid-October weekends are the single busiest period of the year. Cabins book 6–12 months in advance. Parking lots at Old Man's Cave fill by 8 AM. Your strategy: arrive Thursday (weekday pricing), hit trails early, and skip Saturday entirely for cabin time.
❄ Winter (January–February)
Frozen waterfall conditions develop after sustained below-freezing temperatures in January and February. The ice formations at Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, and Old Man's Cave are otherworldly — massive blue-white curtains of ice coating the sandstone walls.
Why Winter Is Underrated
- Lowest prices and best availability — weekday winter cabin rates can drop 50%+ from peak.
- Solitude — you might have entire trails to yourself.
- Cabin season — fireplace, hot tub under snow, zero cell service. This is what the cabin was built for.
- The annual Winter Hike — a massive guided group hike in January that draws thousands.
Winter Gear
Waterproof boots with traction are essential — trails freeze and thaw unpredictably. Layers (ravine floors can be 10–15°F colder than the rim). Trekking poles recommended for icy descents. Check ODNR for temporary trail closures due to ice.
